8 Tips to Investing Successfully

by Dutch 12. May 2010 23:59

by Tom Murcko

According to Charlie Munger, here are the essential considerations for successful investing:
1. Risk: measure it, avoid it if possible, have a margin of safety, and limit downside.
2. Independence: don't follow the herd, the herd will only do average.
3. Preparation: learning, building mental models, and continual improvement.
4. Humility: acknowledge what you don't know, don't be overconfident, stay within your circle of competence, and watch for errors.
5. Analytic rigor: calculate value before looking at price, and be a business analyst and not a securities analyst.
6. Allocation: consider opportunity costs.
7. Patience: Wait for the right opportunities.
8. Decisiveness: great ideas are rare, so bet big when they come along and when you have confidence in them.

Ways Teens Can Make Money Fast

by Dutch 10. May 2010 20:51

If you are a kid and want to make money, you have one thing going for you that many adults do not.  It is called optimism.  Once you set out with a positive attitude and little negative work experience to reflect on, you will not inhibit yourself from taking action.

Planned action is the way you get things done. You plan out what you want to do, research it a bit and then when you have enough information, simply start by doing something to achieve your goal.  So you set a goal like, " I want to make $50 a week". Then you make a list of ways you can do that.  Here are some ideas to get you started.

  • Lemonade Stand
  • Baby Sitting
  • House Cleaning
  • Yard Work
  • Washing neighbor's cars
  • Taking care of neighbor's pets
  • Housesitting for vacationing neighbors (watering plants, feeding pets...)
For teens, you may consider snow shovelling although you should never do a task that is beyond your physical ability because getting injured at a young age is not worth the couple bucks you make. Never attempt a job that you feel is either beyond your ability or unsafe.

In any case, education and family come first, so if you find you have the time and the experience to carry out a particular task, then go for it.  Otherwise, start small say by helping your parents with certain tasks to get the experience so that someone else will pay you for your work.  Sometimes you will need to take a course or get experience to do certain types of work (like babysitting, lifeguard, sports referee...)

So part of the plan will be to get the experience, take the classes and then go after promoting your services.  You can also do internet based work if you are so inclined.  Many companies and individuals need odd writing jobs done for the internet, so pay attention in English class and get your reading and writing (and typing skills) up to snuff.

Sure it is a stretch to say that you are planning for your future by improving your typing skills while playing World of Warcraft, but that may not be such a bad idea!.....(and actually, it works - Wow players and other online communicators learn to type fast out of necessity, but typing is a very important skill to learn, so never too early to get started. If you are very young, check out a SpongeBob typing tutor or other typing software to help you get going.

In any case whether you want to make money "fast" or just start making money, your training, focus and action will help you get started. For a really fast money making tip, ask mom or dad if you can help them clean out the basement or garage (yech, why would you do that?), because then you can make a deal that says you get x% of any items you decide you no longer need and you can list on eBay. Just have your parents sign up for an eBay account and learn how to list your personal items for sale.  Now there is some quick cash! :)

by Dutch 7. May 2010 20:40

By Jason Fulton

Kids these days are very smart and are also computer savvy. They are able to grasp many concepts with a computer much faster than the adults. This is the main reason for them to be able to earn money easily online. In fact many kids with minimal training are able to design and create websites that are much better than the ones made by experienced adults. Also the various animations made by them seem to be ahead of the ones that are made by other people. All these facts make it very easy for the kids to make money online.

There are many kids who are very smart and they are able to make a lot of income online. The wide reach that is got through the internet makes it possible for a child in one corner of the globe to reach another person who is in another corner of the globe. This has also made it possible for the children to sell or provide services for which they are paid money.

The simplest method of earning money that can be employed by the kids is to use their hobby. There are many kids who collect stamps, coins or phone cards. This is not only the hobby of the children, but they are primarily collected by kids. They can use their hobby to earn money online. The kids on one part of the world will be able to sell their coins or stamps to those in another country. This is the best method of making money online for the children.

The only disadvantage in the above method is that the child has to physically pack and then post the various stamps and coins to the people in other parts of the world. The payment is usually done through PayPal or other online transfers.

Other than making money with their hobbies, kids can also make money using their talents online. The kids can try their hand at various games online and then write a review about the game. There are many game manufacturers who are very interested in the comments of these kids as they will be able to fine tune their games to make it more suitable to the tastes of the kids. This is another method of making money online for the kids. The only factor that has to be remembered by the kids is that they should use the internet with adult supervision as there are many anti social elements trying to lure kids.

How to analyze a financial statement

by Dutch 6. May 2010 00:57

How to analyze a financial statement

It's obvious financial statement have a lot of numbers in them and at first glance it can seem unwieldy to read and understand. One way to interpret a financial report is to compute ratios, which means, divide a particular number in the financial report by another. Financial statement ratios are also useful because they enable the reader to compare a business's current performance with its past performance or with another business's performance, regardless of whether sales revenue or net income was bigger or smaller for the other years or the other business. In order words, using ratios can cancel out difference in company sizes.

There aren't many ratios in financial reports. Publicly owned businesses are required to report just one ratio (earnings per share, or EPS) and privately-owned businesses generally don't report any ratios. Generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) don't require that any ratios be reported, except EPS for publicly owned companies.

Ratios don't provide definitive answers, however. They're useful indicators, but aren't the only factor in gauging the profitability and effectiveness of a company.

One ratio that's a useful indicator of a company's profitability is the gross margin ratio. This is the gross margin divided by the sales revenue. Businesses don't discose margin information in their external financial reports. This information is considered to be proprietary in nature and is kept confidential to shield it from competitors.

The profit ratio is very important in analyzing the bottom-line of a company. It indicates how much net income was earned on each $100 of sales revenue. A profit ratio of 5 to 10 percent is common in most industries, although some highly price-competitive industries, such as retailers or grocery stores will show profit ratios of only 1 to 2 percent.
